Keith McHenry, Co-Founder of Food Not Bombs 2012 Noam Chomsky Award Recipien

The Justice Studies Association is happy to award its 2012 Noam Chomsky Award to Keith McHenry – co-founder of the Food Not Bombs social movement. During the 1970s, Keith McHenry began studying painting at Boston University. His anti-nuclear war street art became the subject of an Off Broadway play called Murder Now! and the film, The Sidewalk Sector. At the same time, Keith studied with Howard Zinn and became active with the Clamshell Alliance making several trips to Seabrook, New Hampshire to protest nuclear power.

For the past year, Glenn Beck has directed unwarranted and unprovoked attacks against Dr. Frances Fox Piven, an esteemed, and well-respected public scholar and intellectual. Professor Dr. Piven is also the former president of both the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP) and the American Sociological Association (ASA). Glenn Beck has elected to mischaracterize her work, and the work of her late husband, Richard Cloward, and by so doing has placed her life in grave danger through death threats from individuals who simply follow Mr. Beck's unfounded accusations. We urge News Corporations....

In the last couple of days, we have witnessed the direct involvement of the people of Tunisia in taking control of the restoration of their social well being long overdue. By working collaboratively to remove a dictator that repressed their progress for many decades, Tunisians took the lead and gave notice to all dictators in Africa and the Middle East that there is no longer room for repression and oppression. Over many decades, brutal usurpation of power, the manipulation of national resources to form brutal police, and military machines have often been used to force timorous subservience from most citizens. ....

"Dear Governor Brewer:
We, the membership of the Justice Studies Association (JSA), write to you to strongly express our condemnation of Senate Bill 1070 which you signed into law on April 23, 2010."

By criminalizing failure to carry proof of U.S. citizenship or legal status, this punitive, enforcement-only legal measure not only fails to address the issue of unauthorized immigration, it creates other more serious problems...
