Conference: Guidelines for Presenters

Justice Studies Association members are committed to sessions in which the full participation of all is encouraged and made possible.
Toward this end, we offer the following guidelines to assist participants when making their presentations.

1. Presenters are encouraged to prepare papers for the conference but not to read them. Rather, we ask that all presenters address the major themes of their work, offer whatever insights and findings they have come upon, and discuss the problems they have encountered.

2. JSA conference sessions have, as a rule, a facilitator rather than a discussant. We believe that all those who gather for each session are discussants and, as such, are encouraged to participate and share in the proceedings to the fullest extent possible.

3. Presenters have been urged to limit their opening presentations to about 12 minutes so that most of the time allotted for the session is for discussion. While, at first glance, this might not seem like a lot of time to some, our experience thus far indicates that, once all session presenters have spoken, the amount of time spent in discussion of each presentation more than equals presentation times allocated at more conventional conferences.

4. Before making her or his presentation, each presenter is asked to put her or his work or ideas into some kind of historical context, speaking about the origin of the project, what moved him or her to become interested in the project.

5. Innovative and nontraditional presentations and whole sessions are welcome and encouraged (e. g. song, film, poetry, dramatic rendition).

6. Those needing audiovisual equipment or who have other special needs for their presentation should make their requests known to the program chair when they inquire about making a presentation at the conference.

7. We try to have plenary sessions whenever possible. Thus far we have been nearly entirely successful. This has helped to create a kind of community during the conference that many conferées have found highly inspirational.

8. We ask those who are unable to attend the conference after being scheduled to present, to find a colleague to make their presentation for them without reading a paper. If that is not possible, we ask you to inform the program chair as soon as possible regarding the change so that alternative plans can be made.
